As Summer rolls in, grills across the country are rolled out to center stage when BBQ's, pool parties and picnics fill up the sun-soaked days ahead.  With 4th of July just around the corner, we would like to share a delicious Summer pairing featuring SOGGÉ Gold Blossom Syrah and the iconic grilled burger.

Tomato season is in full swing, so we opted for a sweet and savory tomato jam in place of the traditional condiments usually enjoyed.  Garden-fresh basil leaves stand in for lettuce, providing a bright herbal touch, and provolone brings tang and a creamy richness to the dish.

You will love the combination of these flavors, which in turn highlight the Syrah's silky tannins and long opulent finish.  The wine’s savory notes, along with it's fresh fig, plum and black olive characteristics, compliment the sweet and tart tomato jam.  The basil’s light, licorice element strikes a chord with the herbal notes of the wine, tying everything together.  This is a food and wine pairing not to be missed during the Summer months!

We hope you enjoy this pairing and have a fantastic 4th!

Tomato Jam:  Makes 1 cup, serves 4

1 1/2 lb fresh Roma tomatoes, roughly chopped
1 small yellow onion, diced
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tsp lemon zest, grated
1 tsp lemon juice, freshly squeezed
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1/4 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp salt

Bring all ingredients to a boil in a medium pot and lower to a simmer stirring occasionally.  Simmer until mixture is a thick jam consistency, about 1 1/2 hours.

Grilled BurgersServes 4

1 lb ground beef
Tomato Jam
4 slices of provolone
12 whole, fresh basil leaves

Form meat into patties and season with salt and pepper right before putting them on the grill.  Cook on medium-high (about 400 degrees) 2 to 3 minutes per side or until desired doneness.  Top burgers with cheese and remove from grill when melted.  Add tomato jam and basil leaves on top.  Enjoy!
